Patients visiting the chiropractor for the first time may have some questions as to what to expect after an adjustment. You will most likely, as is the case with the majority of patients receiving chiropractic care, feel relief and notice a decrease in tension. But if you’re experiencing some soreness or are worried about the healing process, below are some tips to consider after receiving an adjustment.
1. If you’re experiencing negative effects after the adjustment, know that they’re usually minor and brief.
2. If you’re experiencing soreness, think of the adjustment as a new exercise program you’ve started. The more your body adjusts, the easier it will become to heal afterward.
3. Consider a self-care plan, which includes:
a. Placing an ice pack on any areas that are swollen and/or red
b. Conduct light stretching throughout periods of the day to release tension
c. Get a good night’s rest on a comfortable mattress
d. Stay away from heavy lifting
e. Take a break from intense exercising for 3-5 days
f. Watch what you eat and make sure you’re on a well balanced diet
g. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
If you’ve tried these methods and your body still hasn’t healed, contact your chiropractor immediately, as this may be a sign of a more serious issue. You’ll want to schedule a follow-up appointment regardless if you’re feeling discomfort or not. As always, it is best to follow the treatment plan given to you by your chiropractor to ensure the best results for your pain management.
